  2. I can remember many children being labeled as dumb and being continually embarrassed before the class and the school, when I was growing up. I also remember some of them leaving Trinidad and emigrating to the U.S. and excelling in their school system. I also recall talking with some of them and realizing the difficult conditions they were living under at home. For some it was near impossible to learn/revise anything at home. You noticed their soiled books and faded school uniforms. Many teachers did not care about this. But some children just had no desire to learn what was taught, not because they were dumb, they were seeing what we did not see, the foolishness of our studies. They excelled in the non academic areas as they called it. Some when exposed to a trade, carpentry, auto mechanics etc. did extremely well. One wonders now how many of these children were potential geniuses in music, astrology, agriculture, medicine, physics, literature, dance etc. and had it destroyed by the treatment they received at that early age.
